Frugal Temptation Island

Published by lucybarnett at 8:45 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

The closest I got to seeing the show ‘Temptation Island’ was occasionally catching a commercial on TV. It looked trashy enough that I was happy that’s all I saw. The one thing that I can relate to is the idea of temptation. I’ve been transforming in to a frugal chick over the past 5 years, first from necessity, then more and more from choice.

For the most part, cutting back is pretty easy. Like flossing your teeth and washing your hair, it’s about establishing habit. Starting any new behaviour and keeping with it depends on how well you create these habits. I’ll be the first to say that I haven’t yet achieved perfection in being frugal. I have slips, spending more than I should on things I don’t really need. It has reached the point where I can say that that is the exception rather than the rule.

There are the things that I lust for, the items or stores that are alluring and wonderful that make me want to give up all my money for stuff. I haven’t - but sometimes the temptation is really strong.

Like with John Fluevog’s darling shoes and accesories. I know that his style is not to everyone’s taste but I have had a long term love affair with Fluevog shoes. A pair of black suede platform heels came with me to my high school prom. Ahhh, the memories!; John Fluevog’s shoes are hip and beautiful not to mention extremely comfortable. Unfortunately for me, they are currently out of the budget.

Here’s the interesting part though. These shoes are incredibly well-made. They even sell replacement soles. If I spend more money on a pair of shoes that are comfortable and will last a long time, does this still qualify as being frugal? Even if these shoes are expensive by my current standards. Likewise, if I stay frugal and buy a much cheaper pair of shoes that doesn’t last nearly as long, is this actually a betrayal of my frugal principles?

I’d like to think so. It means that I can reevaluate my desire to purchase a new pair of Vogs. These ones!
